OLTENIA- THE LAND OF SPLENDOUR
Discover the unforgettable land of Oltenia: the Hurez Monastery and its Brancovan style, the city of Targu Jiu and the four masterpieces created by Constantin Brancusi – one of the greatest modern sculptors, the Danube Gorges, the Roman vestiges at Sarmizegetusa, Corvin Castle, the famous route of Transfagarasan and the breathtaking landscape.
Day 1 : Bucharest
Arriving at Bucharest Airport; meeting point: the Information desk at the Henry Coanda Airport / the parking paying desk at Baneasa Airport. Transfer to your 4 star hotel in Bucharest. Check-in at 19h00, meet with your guide ar the hotel reception and walk to a local restaurant for Dinner. Optional: walking tour of the « Little Paris » of year 1938, by night.
Day 2 : Bucharest – Horezu
In the morning, departure to Ramnicu Valcea. Visit Nicolae Balcescu memorial House (historical and political Romanian personality). Drive to Baile Olanesti. Lunch at Ceausescu’s House and visit that house – one if the most beautiful buildings in Romania.. Arrive at Maldaresti village and visit the complex of ,,Kules’’ combining elements of peasant, civil and military architecture (fortifications), old monuments dating from XVI century. Among the oldest fortress – houses belonging to old boyard families of Oltenia, completely furnished, dates since 1827. Continue with visit to the Hurez Monastery (1690 – 1703), included in the UNESCO Heritage, unique ensemble of medieval art of Oltenia and representative of Brancoveanu style. Dinner and overnight in 3* pension, close to monastery.
Day 3 : Horezu – Targu Jiu – Drobeta Turnu Severin
After breakfast, visit the Horezu Pottery Centre. The Horezu Pottery is remarkable for its stylisation and the use of traditional decorative motifs, using a unique method of modelling and colour distribution. Continue with visit to the Polovragi Monastery (1643, built in the Brancoveanu-style during the reigh of Voivode Matei Basarab. The murals of the Church were painted during Constantin Brâncoveanu reign. Those murals represent scenes inspired from the Old and the New Testament, unique iconographycs of monasteries from the Athos Mount and portraits of saints. Lunch in a selected location.. Continue to Targu Jiu ; arrival at the Central Park of the capital city of Gorj County and visit the monumental Complex “Constantin Brancusi”. Discover the outstanding sculptures : The Table of Silence, the Gate of the Kiss and the Endless Column, placed along the alley that suggest the long way of the most important moments of human life; the position of Brancusi’s masterpieces was meant to induce a strong emotion to visiters. Departure to Drobeta Turnu Severin. Dinner and overnight in a 3*hotel close to the Danube River.
Day 4 : On the banks of the Danube
Drive along the Danube, visit the city of Orsova ancient river port where a beautiful monastery was built. Danube cruise will reveal unique nature beauty, the Danube forms the border between Bulgaria and Romania and separates two cultures : the Latin culture and the Slavic one. Lunch on board Continue to Sarmzegetusa fortress and visit Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the ancient capitel of Dacia during the Roman Empire. Ulpia was set up after the conquest of Dacia by the Romans, after the 2nd battle between the Dacians and the Romans (year ( 105-106 ). Visit the Church of Densus (the 7th cent,, with additions made in the 13th cent), with some materials from the Dacian Sarmizegetusa fortress .Inside the church, there are 15th century mural paintings that show Jesus wearing Romanian traditional clothes. Continue with visit to the Citadel of Corvin, the biggest castle in Romania – a spectacular ensemble, built in the 14th century by King Ioanus Corvinus of Hunedoara ; one of the most beautiful gothic buildings in Europe and the only gothic castle entirely preserved in Romania, although having burned 3 times; large and sumptous rooms and halls with arms and artifacts, towers and bastions, the knights’ hall, the family chapel, Vlad the Impaler also spent some time imprisoned there. Dinner and overnight in the city of Deva; 4 star hotel.
Day 5: Deva – Sibiu - Sibiel
We begin the day with visit of the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilisation and the Citadel. Departure to Sibiu, the former Hermannstadt, founded by the Saxon colonists; they created „the land of the 7 fortresses” – 7 fortified cities, as well as numerours villages where fortified churches were erected to serve as shelters in the event of an attack. Nowadays, Sibiu appeals to the visitors due to its medieval charm, natural beauties and traditions. Lunch in a local restaurant . Visit the Bruckenthal Museum, after the name of its old owner - baron Samuel von Bruckenthal, governor of Transylvanià, at the end of the 18th century; a palace built in a late baroque and rococo style; a portrait made by Jan Van Eyck, from year 1420. At Bruckenthal Museum, one can admire the most beautiful collection of paintings Transylvania, created by Western artists during 15th – 18th century, Romanian painters of the 19th – 20th cent., as wel as a valuable ensemble of furniture and tapestry from the Orient. Continue to Sibiel and visit the Museum of Icons on Glass. Dînner and overnight at guest house in the village of Sibiel , a great opportunity to see for yourself villagers’ life.
Day 6: Sibiu – Transfagarasan - Curtea de Arges
In the morning, leave for Curtea de Arges, the old capitale of Wallachia, via the famous route Transfagarasan which goes up crossing the tallest Romanian mountains – called the Fagaras Mountains, offering breathtaking landscapes. Arrive for lunch at a lovely location, offering you the chance to admire the beauty of the places. The city of Curtea de Arges is situated on several hills meeting the wide plain of Wallachia. We will discover the remarkable Episcopal Church (1512-1517). its architecture reflecting the Oriental influence and where the Romanian Kings are buried. The whole ensemble with the Royal Churh played an important role for the „Romanian national feeling:”. Dînner and overnight in 3* hotel in .Curtea de Arges.
Day 7 : Curtea de Arges – Bucharest
In the morning, Departure for the capital city if Romania.. Arrival at Bucharest. Lunch in a local restaurant. Visit the Village Museum,one of the biggest open-air museum in Europe. City sightseeing including : the Arch of Triumph, the House of Parliament (Casa Poporului), the biggest building in Europe and the 2nd one in the World, Victoria Avenue , the Royal, Palace – today housing the National Art Museum, nice boulevards along the Dambovita river and the beautiful Palace of Justice, the impressive Military Academy , the 'University Square, the Revolution Square with the Romanian Athenaeum aso. Dînner in a local restaurant. Overnight in 4*hotel in Bucharest.
Day 8: Buhcarest
Transfer to the airport for return flight. End of our services.
Extension: Trip to the Danube Delta (on request)
From Day 1 to Day 7: programme as per the above tour.
Day 8, Saturday: Breakfast at the hotel. Meeting with your guide and visit the House of Parliament Lunch and depart for the city Tulcea – located at the entrance gate of the Danube Delta . Dinner and overnight stay in 4star hotel.
Day 9, Sunday: Trip to the Danube Delta for the whole day with fish menu lunch. Dinner and overnight in Tulcea.
Day 10, Monday: In the morning departure to Bucharest airport for your return flight End of our services.
